TRADITIONAL ITALIAN CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 2011

14-15 NOVEMBER 2011

The Italian Christmas Bazaar 2011 was a triumph of the Italian flag's three colours: green, white and red . The 12th edition of this popular event at the Chelsea Old Town Hall, was celebrating the 150 years Anniversay of the Unification of Italy. The Ambassador of Italy Alain Giorgio Maria Economides cut the inaugural ribbon and expressed his congratulations for the excellent organisation of the event. The affluence was of over 1000 people in two days. The Gala Reception's guests were particularly numerous; among them many came from the diplomatic world, journalists such as Antonio Caprarica and the well-known lawyer Nancy Dell'Olio. The event was even broadcasted by RAI, and reached its climax when two of il Circolo's scholars - Angharad Elysabeth Lyddon and Kerri-Lynne Dietz, both opera singers at the Royal Academy of Music - intoned ‘Va Pensiero’ together with the audience and then continued to sing arias from Verdi's and Donizett's repertoires.
The musical pleasure joined to the palate's one. Waiters were passing around with trays filled with Italian delicacies  and the atmosphere became warmer drinking a good glass of Spumante Ferrari. The sweet-toothed could indulge in many different Ferrero chocolates and in the three-storey cake created by Laura Pireddu Occhionero and decorated in green, white and red icing as the evening's dress code.
More than 70 exhibitors have showcased their products: gifts, accessories, fashion, jewellery, arts&crafts and a wide range of quality Italian food and wines from truffles to Panettone. For the lucky ones there were rich lottery prizes and wonderful half priced gifts from the Tree of Wonders. Vintage lovers instead could gfind some special gifts at the Bargain Corner stand.
For the first time some artists and writers were attending the Bazaar and they answered questions about their works. Among them the photographer Piera Costantini Scala who exhibited her Photograph of Giuseppe Garibaldi 's marble bust, portraited from real in 1875 by the Italian sculptor Ercole Rosa, ad recently restored by the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Carlo Presenti. The Bazaar's guests could then have their photo taken next to this national hero.
During the second day of the event, the halls filled with mothers with thier children . They were attrceted by the delicious cup cakes and by the face-painting offered by Alessandra Tortone. The event came to an end with the lottery draw by some children. The most desirable prize was a week stay at the luxurious resort Masseria San Domenico on Puglia's coast.
The total profit was more the 20 thousand pounds : a success that was made possible thanks to the hard and constant work by the Bazaar 2011 Committee all made up of voluteers.
