Join Il Circolo Bookclub, Mondo Nuovo with Olga Campofreda discussing “La citta’ e la casa” by Natalia Ginzburg.
La città e la casa is an epistolary novel that recounts the disintegration of the family, the crisis of traditional roles, and the dramatic emptiness that accompanies modern-day life. The lack of virility, the absence of the father figure, the insecurity of the children compose the fragments of a harmony now dispersed in a dense succession of often dramatic events between Rome, Umbria, and America.
Letter after letter, fathers, sons, friends, and lovers are confronted with themselves and their need for truth. The author reconstructs the splinters of these lives and recounts in her usual style, dry and lyrical at the same time, the loss of that sense of belonging that has its most obvious symbol in the house: because ‘one can sell houses or give them to others as long as one likes, but one still keeps them forever within oneself’.
